The Minotaur Takes A Cigarette Break by Stephen Sherrill

Five thousand years on - and the Minotaur, or M as he is known to his colleagues, is working as a line chef at Grub's Rib in Carolina, keeping to himself, keeping his horns down, trying in vain to put his past behind him. He leads an ordered lifestyle in a shabby trailer park where he tinkers with cars, writes and re-writes to-do lists and observes the haphazard goings on around him. Outwardly controlled, M tries to hide his emotional turmoil as he is transported deeper into the human world of deceit, confusion and need.

Dale Townshend, Jim Watt and Nicola Watson, ‘Poetic fragments: Writing the Abbeys.

Thu 19 May 2016  at 07:30 PM

The third session of the Public Lecture Series: Writing Britain’s Ruins, Tintern, Melrose and Netley, 1700–1850, hosted by Strawberry Hill as a part of AHRC-Funded project at the Universtity of Stirling.

This lecture will explore the ways in which a number of canonical and lesser-known eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century poets, novelists, romancers and playwrights responded to the ruined abbeys that had populated the British landscape ever since the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Focusing on three case-studies, the lecture demonstrates the importance of monastical ruins to the eighteenth-century and Romantic literary imaginations, focusing on such topics as anti-Catholicism, elegy, antiquarianism and the taste for the Gothic in the period.

Dale Townshend is Senior Lecturer in Romantic and Gothic studies at the University of Stirling, and has published widely on Gothic writing of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Nicola Watson is Professor English at the Open University, and is an expert on, among other topics, literary tourism and literary heritage, from the eighteenth century to the present day. Jim Watt is Senior Lecturer in English at the University of York, and has published widely on Gothic fiction and Orientalism in the eighteenth century.

Marion Harney: 'Place-making for the Imagination: Horace Walpole and Strawberry Hill'

Thu 26 May 2016  at 07:30 PM

The fourth session of the Public Lecture Series: Writing Britain’s Ruins, 1700–1850, hosted by Strawberry Hill as a part of AHRC-Funded project at the Universtity of Stirling.

This lecture provides a stimulating account of how Horace Walpole perceived the imaginative potential of landscape and Gothic architectural form in his remodelling of Chopp’d Straw Hall as Strawberry Hill, his ‘little Gothic castle’, from the late 1740s onwards. Through reference to a broad range of rare illustrations, publications and manuscript materials, the lecture places Walpole in a distinct tradition of associative thought that reaches back at least as far as Joseph Addison at the beginning of the eighteenth century.

Marion Harney is Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture at the University of Bath. An expert on Strawberry Hill, the conservation of historic gardens and landscape conservation, she is the author of, among other studies, the highly acclaimed monograph, Place-Making for the Imagination: Horace Walpole and Strawberry Hill (2013).

Although the events are free, we would greatly appreciate a donation of £5.00 from all non-concessionary attendees. Funds raised will be put towards the further restoration of Horace Walpole's Gothic castle.

Oliver Cox: 'Forgetting Horace Walpole'

Thu 2 Jun 2016  at 07:30 PM

The fifth session of the Public Lecture Series: Writing Britain’s Ruins, 1700–1850, hosted by Strawberry Hill as a part of AHRC-Funded project at the Universtity of Stirling.

This lecture offers an introduction to the life and work of Sir Roger Newdigate, the prolific antiquarian, politician and contemporary of Horace Walpole. Seeking to counter Newdigate’s often overlooked place in the history of the Gothic Revival, the lecture focuses on the work that, much like

Walpole at Strawberry Hill, Newdigate undertook in the ‘Gothicising’ of Arbury Hall, Warwickshire, in the eighteenth century.

Oliver Cox is the founder of Thames Valley Country House Partnership at the University of Oxford. He has published widely on Gothic Revival architecture, landscape gardening, patriotism, and is currently writing From Addison to Austen: A Short Guide to the Long Eighteenth Century.

Although the events are free, we would greatly appreciate a donation of £5.00 from all non-concessionary attendees. Funds raised will be put towards the further restoration of Horace Walpole's Gothic castle.

The HandleBards present Romeo and Juliet

Fri 8 Jul 2016  at 07:00 PM

A side-splitting, bicycle-powered production
of Shakespeare’s Romeo And Juliet.

Described by none other than Sir Ian McKellen
as “uproariously funny”, the HandleBards present Shakespeare’s plays as you’ve never seen them before - fast-paced, irreverent and bicycle-powered.

Since 2013, the HandleBards have pedalled over 5000 miles across the world, carrying all their
set, props and costumes on just four bicycles. 2016, the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s
death, sees the first outing of their all-female troupe.

On 8 July they’re stopping off at Strawberry Hill House, to perform their side-splitting production
of Shakespeare’s epic tale of two lovers who’ve
everything stacked against them. Expect a
“gloriously eccentric and very, very
funny” (The Stage, on A Midsummer Night
’s Dream) night, delivered on eight very sore legs. The girls will be accompanied by live music from a local musician.

Airs for the season

Thu 21 Jul 2016  at 07:30 PM

Please note the date of this event has changed to 21st July

Flute, harp and ‘cello sounds like such an obvious combination to modern ears, that is hard to believe that it was was a relatively new concept in the 18th Century. Although all three achieved recognisable forms in the late 17th Century, each was undergoing rapid developments in construction and design and composers were beginning to explore the way in which their tones and timbres, quite unlike their modern counterparts, interacted with each other.

Here we explore a programme of music from the cutting edge on the late 18th Century, including a trio composed for harpist Edward Jones by J C Bach, sonatas with continuo by Abel, Cirri, and Paxton, and a selection of charming suites by James Oswald, each named after a seasonal plant of flower, and maybe a social dance tune or two.

Performers

Rosemary Edwards (Baroque violoncello)

Mike Parker (Single-action harp)

William Summers one-keyed flute

Pre-show dining available in the scenic Cloister Coffee House. Dinners should pre-book table in the tickets section (no charge) and arrive at the cafe for 5.30pm on the evening. the bistro menu is available to view here.

A complimentary session is on offer for this autumn’s Garden History course at Strawberry Hill which promises a fascinating insight into the forgotten era of formal English garden design. The session will take place at Strawberry Hill on Thursday 1st September between 11am and 1pm, when Michael Ann Mullen and Stephen Smith will explore the background and reveal the stories illuminating an era of magnificent English garden design, eclipsed in the later 18th Century by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. If you’re interested in gardens, history or both and would like to find out more of what the new course has to offer, come along and join us at this free introductory session.

EVOLUTION OF THE ENGLISH GARDEN 1680-1790

Thu 29 Sep 2016 - Thu 8 Dec 2016 at 11:00 AM - 01:00 PM

A ten week course taught by Michael Ann Mullen and Stephen Smith

Horace Walpole was an outspoken critic of the formal garden and one of the most enthusiastic proponents of the new ‘natural’ style that occurred during the eighteenth century. Here at Strawberry Hill in 1771, he published his Essay on Modern Gardening, one of the most influential books on these changes in approach to gardening. This course covers the period when symmetry and the straight line began to give way to a less rigid framework and garden makers began to incorporate more natural elements like the groves, natural woodland and serpentine streams seen later at Rousham and Stowe.

The cost of the ten week course is £225

Gothic Bookclub: the Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

Mon 3 Oct 2016  at 07:30 PM

The Handmaid's Tale is set in a future America where epidemics and pesticides have made the majority of the population sterile and in the face of catastrophically declining birthrates a right wing, Old Testament fundamentalist theocracy have used this crisis as a pretext to completely reorder the social structure of America. Only a handful of women are able to have children: the so-called 'Handmaids' who form a sort of slave class and act as 'second wives' to rich and powerful men so that they can reproduce. The Handmaids are indoctrinated beforehand as part of a special religious order and much of the novel is concerned with their conditioning process. The story centres around one of these handmaids, 0ffred and her life as a potential surrogate mother to a childless couple: a high ranking commander and his wife, Serena Joy.
