Mr Walpole’s Bedchamber

This room was added the newly furnished villa by Horace Walpole after the completion of the Library and Great Parlour. Prior to this Walpole used the Blue Bedchamber, but this area, created atop the Breakfast Room, is a more luxurious space. This is reflected in the extravagant turquoise flock wallpaper hung in 2014.

The cupboard to the right of the fireplace was created for Frances Waldegrave and has inadvertently preserved both Walpole’s 1756 paper and her 1856 French floral design.

Alongside the Plaid Chamber and the Dressing Room Adjoining the bedroom forms part of a suite, a modern way of living which had become fashionable in country houses by the 1720s.
