This summer, from 17 July to 7 September, we’re opening our doors every day of the week—giving you even more opportunities to explore one of London’s most magical historic houses.
Strawberry Hill House, created in the 18th century by Horace Walpole—writer, art collector, and author of The Castle of Otranto—is internationally renowned as a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture. Built as a personal retreat and theatrical showpiece, Walpole once joked that “my buildings, like my writings, are of paper, and will blow away ten years after I am dead.” But more than 250 years later, his fantasy villa still stands—delicate, dazzling, and unlike anything else in London.
Once reserved for a privileged few, visiting Strawberry Hill came with strict conditions. A surviving 18th-century ticket warns that “the House and Garden are never shown in an Evening; and Persons are desired not to bring Children with them”. Today, the house is throwing open its doors. Families are warmly welcomed to explore the house and gardens together, take part in two enchanting Faery Trails, enjoy pre-ordered picnics beneath the trees, or indulge in afternoon tea from our on-site Roots & Berries Café.
In a playful reversal of Walpole’s original rules, we will also open after hours for a one-night-only open-air concert on Sunday 24 August, featuring the Pasadena Roof Orchestra. Performing the finest music of the 1920s and ’30s in the romantic setting of Strawberry Hill’s gardens, the event promises vintage glamour and summer-night enchantment. Gates open at 6pm, with live music from 7 to 9pm.
Whether you’re visiting from across town or across the globe, Strawberry Hill House offers a truly magical escape this summer.
The house will be open from 11am to 4pm, with last entry at 3pm, while the garden and café will be open from 9am to 4pm.
