This stunning exhibition traces the extraordinary story of a jewel-encrusted Ottoman dagger that Horace Walpole believed once belonged to Henry VIII. Sold at the famous 1842 Strawberry Hill sale to Shakespearean actor Charles John Kean, the dagger vanished after last being seen at Hever Castle in 1946. However, two remarkably similar daggers survive and for the first time, these extraordinary objects will be displayed together, revealing a fascinating story that may connect them all.
Through original research, world-class loans, and collaboration with the Garrick Club, this exhibition explores how a single lost object continues to illuminate the networks between Ottoman courts, Tudor England, Victorian theatre, and Horace Walpole.
